DOMA Could Allow for Immigration of Same-Sex Couples

WASHINGTON - Just hours after DOMA was overruled, hopefuls are already speculating that this might pave the way for same-sex couples to be able to apply for a Family Visa.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement that they are still reviewing the ruling issued by the justices on Wednesday, on whether to accept same-sex couples' rights to a sponsorship visa. Immigration Equality, a group that has been fighting for equal rights for all immigrant families, estimates 36,000 same-sex couples that would be able to benefit from this ruling.

"At long last, we can now tell our families that yes, they are eligible to apply for green cards," Rachel Tiven, executive director of the group, said.

This decision by the court also means that the current immigration reform bill in the Senate might not divide supporters for the bill. "There's no need now to take a vote on this because we've fixed the problem," Lanae Erickson Hatalsky, director of social policy of The Third Way, said. The Third Way is a think tank that supports the immigration bill and the new border security amendment.
